In 2009, we celebrated our eighth annual One Great Day of Service. While the rains did come, the spirits of our volunteers were not dampened. Below is an incomplete, though overwhelming listing of just some of the things accomplished on this awesome day: Five groups participated in activities at nursing home facilities Two groups served food to those in need Several folks volunteered at the Sawnee Arts Festival Others painted at The Place We replaced the chains on the playground swings Many teams performed repair work, yard work and cleaning for the elderly in our community One group built park benches for Good Shepherd Place Another laid carpet and vinyl for a United Methodist Hispanic Congregation in Cornelia 100 care packages for our troops were created Our community food drive collected 11,454 units of food and $559.00 in donations for our food pantry Volunteers baked cookies and delivered to shut-ins We prepared 50 toiletry packages and 50 school supply packages for at-risk children in our community We prepared 50 health kits for UMCOR We wrapped 14,000 packets of silverware for Hosea’s Easter meal Some sewed 33 hospital gowns and others made 39 blankets for hospice Volunteers prepared breakfast and lunch for our teams We collected 73 units of blood for our blood drive Our Kids Camp created picture holders for nursing home residents and baked cupcakes for our firefighters. Still others helped create the panels needed for our upcoming Arts Festival The list goes on as we continue to finish the projects which were affected by the rains. I am so appreciative of all of the team leaders and volunteers who have helped make a difference in the lives of those in our midst. Janet Walden
